Cleveland Fire Brigade has launched its 18th annual Stay Safe and Warm campaign, offering free support to residents struggling to keep their homes heated this winter. The campaign runs from October 2026 to March 2027 across Hartlepool, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland.
Following a free home assessment, residents may receive practical items including heaters, blankets and hot water bottles. The service also includes energy-saving advice to make homes safer and warmer, plus referrals to other support services where needed.
Last year, the campaign supported more than 400 households and distributed nearly 900 pieces of equipment.
Who can apply
The support is available to anyone struggling to stay warm or heat their home, whether facing a temporary problem such as a boiler breakdown or ongoing concerns about heating costs.
Energy-saving tips
Cleveland Fire Brigade recommends moving furniture away from radiators to allow heat circulation, closing curtains in the evening, and using heating controls to manage room temperatures. Turning the room thermostat down by 1°C can save 10% off heating bills. Recommended room temperature is between 18°C and 21°C.
Other advice includes draught-proofing windows and doors with brush or PVC seals, fitting a brush or spring flap to letterboxes, and covering keyholes. Setting the hot water tank thermostat to 60°C is also suggested.
