A mother-and-son team is building an inclusive dance fitness community in Middlesbrough for people who may not feel comfortable in a traditional gym or dance studio.
Billingham-based instructor Matt Campbell launched Vibe Dance Fitness in January 2023 and now works alongside his mum, Chris. The group runs weekly sessions across Teesside, including a Wednesday evening class at Dormans Club in Linthorpe.
The idea has roots in an earlier family experience. Matt and Chris both took part in Ashley Banjo's Big Town Dance, the community dance project filmed in Stockton-on-Tees with Ashley Banjo and Diversity.

“The bit that stayed with me was seeing ordinary people realise dance could belong to them too,” Matt said. “You do not have to arrive confident, fit or knowing the steps. You can just turn up, move in a way that works for you and be part of the room.”
A low-pressure approach to exercise
Sessions combine a warm-up, follow-along choreography, full routines and a cool-down using pop, dance and club music. Participants choose their own intensity, adapt movements and take breaks when needed.
Matt said the classes take a body-neutral approach without weigh-ins, calorie targets or pressure for everybody to move in the same way. They are aimed at nervous beginners and people returning to exercise as well as experienced dancers looking for a more relaxed session.
Working with his mum had helped keep the sessions welcoming and social, he added, with room for nerves, mistakes and laughter.
