A charity is appealing for adults in Middlesbrough to volunteer one hour a week to support a young person through school.

MCR Pathways is recruiting volunteer mentors who can meet a pupil for one hour during the school day each week in term time. Volunteers are asked to commit for at least a year and to allow additional time for travel to and from the school.

The organisation says mentors do not need teaching or youth-work experience. Training and ongoing support are provided, with the focus placed on listening, consistency and helping a young person think about their interests and future.

The appeal follows the charity's work with schools in Middlesbrough, including Lift Unity City Academy in Ormesby. MCR Pathways highlighted the experience of local mentor Richard Tait in July, describing how regular conversations helped create a supportive relationship with a pupil at the academy.

According to the charity, mentoring sessions take place in school at an agreed time. A local team supports the volunteer and young person throughout the match.

People who register are invited to an interview before completing checks and training. MCR Pathways says the process includes references, a Disclosure and Barring Service check, safeguarding training and preparation for the weekly mentoring meetings.

The programme is designed to give young people a dependable adult outside their family and teaching team who can listen without judgement. Mentors may discuss school, hobbies, ambitions, confidence and the practical steps a young person can take towards their goals.

Ernest Moses, from MCR Pathways, said the charity is looking for people who can offer their time consistently and help a young person feel heard and encouraged.
