Middlesbrough FC's Under-21s will begin their European challenge this week when Belgian side Genk visit the Riverside for the opening game of the Premier League International Cup on Wednesday at 7pm.
Mark Tinkler's side will also face European giants Juventus, Valencia and Monaco in the competition's group stage. The tournament brings together highly-rated youngsters from across Europe. Boro qualified after finishing 16th in PL2 last season.
Recent Form
The U21s have won all three games in the National League Cup. In PL2 action, they have picked up two draws from their last two games, against Leeds United and Aston Villa.
Tinkler said: "We didn't start the season particularly well, but we've been getting better in terms of our rhythm and how we want to play. The last two games have been positive in an attacking sense and we want to build on that, but we know we need to do better defensively."
Why the Riverside Matters
Tinkler believes playing at the stadium is valuable for development. He said: "We played in this competition a couple of years ago and it was a great learning experience for the players. It's great for the lads to play at the stadium, because they have to learn how to play in that sort of environment. It's a different challenge to the PL2 games for them and they tell you a lot about the character of the players."
Boro were last in this competition two seasons ago. One memorable moment saw the Teessiders come from two goals down to beat Borussia Monchengladbach at the Riverside.
