Kim Hellberg has told BBC Radio Tees that Middlesbrough's play-off disappointment last season has strengthened the club rather than broken it, as the team prepares for another promotion push.
The club's manager said losing to Southampton in the play-offs, then being reinstated after Tonda Eckert's side were thrown out, only to lose 1-0 to Hull City at Wembley, was a difficult rollercoaster. But Hellberg insisted the experience has united players and supporters.
A Season That Could Have Broken the Club
Middlesbrough won just two of their last 10 league games, missing automatic promotion by four points. After a 0-0 draw with Southampton at the Riverside, Boro were beaten 2-1 at St Mary's in the play-off semi-final.
The club was then reinstated to the play-offs following the disqualification of Southampton, given a second chance to reach the Premier League. However, they lost 1-0 to Hull City in the play-off final at Wembley.
Growth Through Adversity
"It is through difficult times that you grow; it's a cliche but it's true," Hellberg said. "It can break you if you don't use it in the right way but I see players and supporters growing together through it."
The manager said the experiences created lasting memories that would drive the club forward. "We were looking at the best season in 10 years and then it didn't go our way. Through that the passion and togetherness grew. We know there is a lot of hard work to do but everyone has grown from last season — me included."
Hellberg said he believes the club is now "in a good place" to push for promotion again, with players and supporters feeling it is possible to reach those situations once more.
