Middlesbrough Under-21s fought back to claim a point in an eight-goal thriller against Leeds United at Heritage Park on Sunday, 13 September 2026. The visitors took control with three first-half goals before Cruz Ibeh pulled one back for Boro, then added a second after the break as the hosts levelled through an own goal before Leeds restored their lead. But Boro kept fighting, and Ibeh completed his hat-trick late on to earn a share of the spoils.
First Half Dominance
Leeds started strongly with Harvey Vincent giving the visitors an early lead after latching onto a through ball from Freddie Lane with a low effort past Shea Connor.
Ibeh tested Leeds goalkeeper Rory Mahady with a low free-kick and created space for himself with a nutmeg before seeing a shot deflected over. But Leeds strengthened their grip with a quickfire double from striker Carrick Njinko — first a well-placed header from Lane's cross, then a cool finish after a one-two with Vincent.
Boro reduced the deficit before the break when Ibeh flicked home a smart header from a free-kick.
Second-Half Rally
The momentum continued in Boro's favour after the interval. Ibeh found the net again, tucking home Ezra Tika-Lemba's inviting ball to bring the deficit to one. Ibeh had another chance when released behind the defence but shot early and drove straight at Mahady.
Leeds continued to pose a threat on the counter. Jacob Render hit the post and fellow substitute Louis Philpott failed to convert the rebound.
The Teessiders levelled shortly after the hour mark when unfortunate Leeds defender Louis Enahoro-Marcus saw a looping header beat his own keeper. But Leeds' lead was restored at the end of another breakaway as Freddie Lane rattled in via the crossbar.
Late Drama
Boro battered on the door in search of a late equaliser. Substitute Rio Patterson-Powell clipped the post with a low drive, and another replacement Layton Campbell rounded Mahady before having his effort cleared off the line. Patterson-Powell steered in at the back post but it was ruled out for handball.
Former Boro favourite Jonny Howson, now 38 and a coach with his boyhood club, received a warm reception with his late introduction as a substitute.

Manager Mark Tinkler's youngsters have found form in the National League Cup this campaign, enjoying a third win in the competition in midweek away at Tamworth. Defender George Edmondson came in for James Wilson, with Frankie Coulson also entering the line-up for Jayden Carbon. Leeds included some first-team experience of their own, with Ilia Gruev involved after a lengthy injury.
