Middlesbrough FC has signed 32-year-old full-back Sam Byram as the club's ninth summer signing. Byram joins from Leeds United, where he featured regularly last season as the club won the Sky Bet Championship.
Career path
Born in Thurrock, Essex, in September 1993, Byram moved north as a youngster and joined Leeds United's Academy in 2005. He signed a scholarship at 16 and progressed to his first professional deal two years later.
His senior debut came on the opening day of the 2012/13 season under then-Leeds manager Neil Warnock — who would later manage Middlesbrough. Byram impressed so much early in that campaign that he signed a new three-year contract, followed by another new deal midway through the season.
During his initial spell at Leeds, Byram won the club's Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, Players' Player of the Year and Supporters' Club Player of the Year awards.
Recent moves
Byram left Leeds for West Ham United in January 2016, spending three-and-a-half years at the club. He made his European debut in the Europa League during that time and had a loan spell with Nottingham Forest.
He joined Norwich City in July 2019 and spent four years at Carrow Road before rejoining Leeds in the summer of 2023. Under manager Daniel Farke, Byram became a regular and played a key part in Leeds' Sky Bet Championship title win in 2024/25, operating in both full-back positions. He also appeared for Leeds in the Premier League last season.
Byram now moves to Middlesbrough in search of more regular minutes.
