Tommy Conway has fully embraced his new role as a left winger for Middlesbrough since the arrival of manager Kim Hellberg, demonstrating a willingness to learn an unfamiliar position in pursuit of promotion to the Premier League.

The 24-year-old striker arrived at Boro two years ago from Bristol City as the main attacking threat, scoring 13 goals in each of the previous two seasons. Since Hellberg's appointment, Conway has shifted to a wider role on the left flank rather than playing through the middle as a traditional number nine.

Conway told BBC Radio Tees he was "on board" with the tactical change. "I could have chucked my toys out of the pram saying I wanted to be the number nine and play through the middle, but that's not me," he said. "I just want to play and help the team in any way, shape or form."

First Goal of the Season Against Cardiff

Conway grabbed his first goal of the season in Middlesbrough's 2-2 draw with Cardiff City, scoring the opener as Boro came from two goals down at half-time to draw with their Welsh visitors.

The Scotland international has also contributed three assists so far this campaign. The most notable came from a left-footed cross from the left wing in Middlesbrough's home victory over Wolves, when he escaped the attentions of former England right-back Kieran Trippier to set up Will Lankshear for the winner.

Recovery From Play-Off Injury

Conway suffered a fractured ankle in the second leg of Middlesbrough's play-off semi-final against Southampton in May, an injury that ended his hopes of helping Boro win promotion and going to the World Cup with Scotland. He left the field in tears.

After a summer of recovery, Conway has returned to action. The Cardiff match was his 10th appearance of the campaign and the first time he had completed a full match for five months.

Conway said he felt "back to my best" against Wolves. "I'm now learning every day to be a left winger and I feel like I'm getting better every week," he told BBC Radio Tees. "I'm getting more confident coming up against the full-backs because it's not something I would have done throughout my career growing up."

"Everyone knows how much I love playing for this club and in front of these fans. I just want to do well and I just want to get to the Premier League. One foot in front of the other, every day trying to get better and hopefully we'll get there at the end of the season."
