Middlesbrough U21s suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Tottenham Hotspur U21s on Sunday afternoon, losing 2–1 in PL2 action. Mark Tinkler's side had looked set to secure their first league win of the season before Elisha Sowunmi struck three minutes into injury time to complete Spurs' comeback.
James Wilson gave Boro an early advantage, heading in from an Isaac Greenup corner just after the quarter-hour mark. The young side had started brightly, with Cruz Ibeh forcing a save from Tottenham goalkeeper Archer, and Law McCabe coming close to double the lead with a driven shot from range that was tipped wide.
Second-half collapse
Tottenham equalised from the penalty spot on the hour mark when Tyrese Hall converted after Isaac Greenup was adjudged to have fouled inside the box. Despite Boro's valiant defending as the visitors pressed for a winner, Sowunmi's injury-time strike denied them a first PL2 win of the season.
The defeat comes after Middlesbrough U21s' heavy midweek loss to Boreham Wood.
